"SERVICE YOU CAN ALWAYS TRUST" About Genco Corporation After the destruction of Hurricane Hazel in 1954, Myrtle Beach and South Carolina’s Grand Strand experienced tremendous growth in accommodations and businesses pertaining to tourism. Mr. and Mrs. Gray, who founded Grayco Steel Company of Myrtle Beach in 1946, established new divisions to market needed products for the hospitality industry. General Chemical Company was founded in 1954, with a subsequent name change to Genco Chemicals, for the purpose of selling cleaning supplies and paper products. The Grays also created Sunco Pool Company for the purpose of swimming pool construction and the marketing of pool supplies and expertise. Though family owned, Genco and Sunco, are now totally separate. When established, they shared business locations and administrative staffs, but in the mid 1970’s, began to be managed separately. During the 1990’s Sunco was purchased by Bob Gray, son Philip and Esther, and Genco by Ellen Gray Chapman, their Daughter. During the mid 1980’s, a branch location of Genco was opened by daughter Nelda Gray Ball and husband, Ban Ball, in Simpsonville, Spartanburg and Columbia, SC, is now a major force in the pool and spa industries. Genco Corporation moved in 1981 to 1320 Highway 501 West in Myrtle Beach, SC, when Grayco Steel Corporation, now owned by the Gray’s son, Dan, relocated from the site to a new facility. After 50 years, Genco is still a strong supplier of cleaning and janitorial products to commercial customers along the Grand Strand and within a radius of 100 miles of Myrtle Beach. Genco has an extremely fine staff of outside salesmen. In addition, our administrative, showroom, warehouse and delivery staffs are outstanding. Several current staff members have been with the company since its earliest days, while others have accrued 15-30 years with Genco. As a company, we have continually upgraded our inventory and technical expertise in order to remain competitive and continue to grow.
